Contrary to expectations, use of a ‘second screen’ tablet or smart phone does not dent viewers’ enthusiasm for watching ‘normal’ broadcast TV. TDG’s Video Behaviour Among iPad/Tablet Users survey of 18-49 year old tablet owners has revealed that of the 88% who use their device to watch online video, 39% actually watch more broadcast TV programmes as a result. Only 15% reported that tablet viewing caused them to watch less regular TV. Even among tablet owners over 50, TV viewing is overall unaffected by tablet video.

TV pictures with four times the detail of current high definition TV could be broadcast by SES’ ASTRA satellites in a few years. Live satellite test transmissions of so-called ‘4K’ or ‘Ultra HD’ TV were demonstrated by SES, the operator of the ASTRA satellites, and Sony at a recent satellite trade exhibition, via an ASTRA 3B transponder at 23.5° East.

SES predicts that commercial Ultra High Definition services may start in as little as two or three years, with the format ‘kick started’ by pay TV platforms such as BSkyB and Sky Deutschland. TV sets with 4K screens are already being sold, at a considerable premium, as the ultimate way to watch current HD broadcasts, and it is expected that prices will have fallen sharply by the time that 4K services start.

The switch-off of German analogue TV in April has not dented Germany’s enthusiasm for satellite TV. The Satellite Monitor survey conducted for SES, operator of the ASTRA satellites, has found that in Germany, satellite TV is now more popular than ever, with 100,000 additional households watching via satellite over the last six months, or 17.6 million in total.

The popularity of high definition TV in Germany has also increased and 7.2 million homes (41% of satellite TV households) now watch in HD (up from under 6 million at the end of 2011).
