HD+ 4 = 20

Four new channels have been added to HD+, to bring the number of HD channels on the German high definition satellite platform to 20. The new additions are news channel n-tv HD, male orientated entertainment channels ProSieben Maxx HD and RTL Nitro HD, and women’s lifestyle channel TLC HD.

Leading German pay-TV platform Sky Deutschland reports that in 2013 its audience increased by over 300,000 subscribers to 3,667,000. Nearly half of these (1.8 million) subscribe to Sky’s high definition package. The broadcaster expects to add up to another 450,000 new subscribers to the service in 2014.

The five HD channels from German broadcaster ProSiebenSat.1 will broadcast free-to-air over the Easter period. From April 18 until April 21, viewers with an HD TV and receiver, and a dish for Astra 19.2°E, will be able to watch Pro7, Sat.1, Kabel Eins, Sixx and ProSieben Maxx in high definition without any viewing card.

According to Polish public broadcaster, Telewizja Polska (TVP), HbbTV services on its hybrid broadcast/online platform are now used by more than 320,000 viewers in Poland. TVP expects this to rise to 500,000 by the end of the year.

German pay TV platform Sky Deutschland is adding three new high definition channels to the platform in April. TNT Glitz HD shows fashion and lifestyle documentaries, series and films aimed at a young female audience (including hit series, Girls) as part of the Sky Welt HD package. Spiegel Geschichte HD is showing documentaries about German and World history and is available to all satellite customers, as is Disney Junior HD which carries series and films for pre-school children.

Viewers of German commercial channel RTL using an HbbTV set-top box or smart TV can now access the Dooloop online music channel. Dooloop joins the Clipfish music channel on RTL’s free red button service but offers less charts-orientated music with track selection by genre.

German free-to-air TV now includes the Disney Channel. Previously encrypted as part of the Sky Deutschland pay-TV platform, the free Disney Channel targets children aged 3-13 during the daytime, showing series such as Phineas & FerbGood Luck Charlie, and The Wizards of Waverley Place, and in the evening shows family series and films such as Pixar animated features.

The TVP Regionalna regional channels from Polish state broadcaster, Telewizja Polska (TVP) are now available across Europe to viewers of the main and thematic TVP channels using HbbTV compatible equipment connected to the internet.

German broadcasters offer more than 70 apps for smart (internet-connected) TVs and set-top boxes using the HbbTV (Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV) standard, generating many millions of views, according to a report by the Deutsche TV Platform.

Disney Channel HD will launch on German high definition satellite platform, HD+ on January 17. The family and kids channel will be the 16th channel to join the platform.
