Austria’s largest private broadcaster ATV has launched the ATV2 entertainment channel from ASTRA 19.2°E, joining ORF Sport Plus on the new Austrian transponder at 11.244GHz/H. Reception is free-to-view but requires an ORF Digital or Sky Austria viewing card.

Argos TV and CCTV News have joined the UK free-to-air Freesat platform. Argos TV, the demonstration and selling channel from the UK retail chain is channel 819 in the Freesat EPG. CCTV News, the English-language news channel from China’s largest national TV network, China Central Television (CCTV) is channel 211.

Both Argos TV and CCTV News broadcast from the ASTRA 28.2°E satellites

International 3D entertainment channel, High TV, has begun free-to-air transmission from ASTRA 23.5°E. Originating from the US, High TV broadcasts 24/7 with 400 hours of 3D entertainment lined up for the first year,  including films, drama, lifestyle, comedy, travel, and music. The channel is primarily intended for cable distribution and is broadcast on the same transponder as international cultural 3D channel, Brava 3D and the ASTRA 3D Demo channel.

Pay-TV platform Sky UK added just 26,000 new subscribers during the third quarter of the year, but the number of customers watching in high definition rose by 103,000, a 771,000 increase over the past year. Sky now has over 10.2 million TV subscribers in the UK and Ireland, with 3.9 million or over 38% taking the Sky HD package. Sky UK broadcasts from the ASTRA 28.2°E satellites.

A UK version of the famous US non-profit Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) channel is broadcasting from the ASTRA 19.2°E satellites as part of the Sky UK platform. The channel carries factual programming including some US versions of British series such as Antiques Roadshow, and home-grown PBS productions such as Nova (science documentaries), Frontline (current affairs), American Experience (history) and PBS Newshour. PBS is channel number 166 in the Sky EPG.

French subscribers to the CanalSat digital satellite TV platform broadcasting on ASTRA 19.2°E can enjoy an early start to the Christmas season with La Chaîne du Père Noël (Father Christmas Channel) that launches on November 5.

Aimed at pre-school children, the channel features Christmas films, cartoons such as L'apprenti Père Noël (Santa's Apprentice) and Pororo The Little Penguin and interactive games including Passe ton diplôme de Père Noël (Pass Your Father Christmas Diploma) and Cache-cache dans l'atelier du Père Noël (Hide-and-seek In Santa's Workshop), and will run until Christmas Day.

An additional transponder on ASTRA 19.2°E has been contracted for TV channels broadcasting to Austria. First in place is Sport Plus, part of the ORF Digital platform from Austrian national broadcaster, Österreichischer Rundfunk. Private Austrian broadcaster ATV will launch a second channel, ATV2, in December.

Two more channels have begun transmission in high definition on the Sky Deutschland platform broadcasting on the ASTRA 19.2°E satellites. Fox HD shows a range of US drama and entertainment series, and Nat Geo Wild HD delivers natural history documentaries in stunning HD quality. Both channels are part of the Sky Welt pay-TV package and there are now a total of 15 Sky HD channels, 12 HD+ channels and five free-to-air HD channels available to Sky subscribers.

In addition, Sky Deutschland has announced that Sky Sport News HD, the first 24/7 sports news channel in Germany and Austria, is to start broadcasting on December 1, joining five other HD sports channels broadcast by the platform.

The ASTRA 1N satellite, launched on August 6, is now fully operational in its new home at 28.2°E alongside ASTRA 2A, ASTRA 2B and ASTRA 2D. The ASTRA 1N satellite has 52 transponders which will serve broadcasters to the UK and Ireland, and provide an additional orbital position for the ASTRA2Connect broadband-by-satellite service.
