Skylink’s New Kombi

Skylink, the direct-to-home pay-TV broadcaster for the Czech Republic and Slovakia, has introduced a new TV package for subscribers which it claims to be the “most cost-effective”. Kombi includes all 27 channels in the Multi basic tier package, new SD channels Sport 2 and Paprika, plus seven HD channels (Eurosport, MTV, National Geographic Wild, Nova Sport, Penthouse, Spektrum, and Travel Channel).

Kombi is only available to subscribers with an HD receiver and costs €14.80 per month. All Skylink channels are broadcast from ASTRA 23.5°E.

Festivals in 3D

For the first time the Isle of Wight music festival on June 10-12, featuring Kings of Leon, Foo Fighters and Pulp, will be broadcast live in 3D. Sky UK will include two hours of live coverage from each day of the festival on the Sky 3D channel, which Sky says will “bring viewers closer than ever to the real festival experience”.

Over seven hours of September’s Bestival (also held on the Isle of Wight), with performances from The Cure, Primal Scream and Public Enemy, will also be broadcast on Sky 3D.

Sky 3D is broadcast on ASTRA 28.2°E and is available at no additional charge to all Sky World subscribers with a Sky HD receiver and HD ready TV.

There will be at least one 3D TV set in 28% of European households by 2015 according to research by Pricewaterhouse Coopers. The PwC study also says that although 3D programming will predominantly focus on sports event and concerts, the main pay-TV platform in most countries will have at least one 3D channel.

There are already six commercial 3D channels broadcasting to Europe from ASTRA satellites.

Playhouse Turns Junior

The Playhouse Disney preschool children’s channel is changing its name to Disney Junior. The rebranded channel maintains its schedule of cartoons and live studio shows but aims to reach further up the age range, catering for 2-7 year olds.

Playhouse Disney broadcasts in different versions for different European countries, including the UK (on ASTRA 28.2°E), Germany (ASTRA 19.2°E and ASTRA 23.5°E), France (ASTRA 19.2°E) and Scandinavia (ASTRA 5°E). In the UK (the first country worldwide to receive Playhouse Disney), the channel has already made the name change and other countries will follow during the year, starting with France on May 28.

3D Demo for Spain

Spanish pay-TV operator Digital+ has launched a 3D demo channel aimed at installers and retailers but available free-to-air to anyone with the necessary 3D-ready receiver and TV, and a dish aimed at ASTRA 23.5°E. Canal+ 3D Demo broadcasts 3D film and concert clips during the daytime, and is the sixth commercial 3D channel to be carried on ASTRA satellites.

Free HD News from NHK

Japanese channel, NHK World will be the first news channel to broadcast in HD as part of the UK free-to-air Freesat platform from ASTRA 28.2°E. As well as news reports, NHK World broadcasts business and technology news, and programmes on Japanese culture, cooking, and travel, all in the English language, and will join the Freesat EPG later this month.

Youth Culture Hits ZDF

German public broadcaster ZDF changes the name of performing arts channel ZDFtheaterkanal to ZDFkultur on April 7, with a re-launch aiming the channel at a younger audience. Although the new channel will continue to feature stage performances and concerts, ZDFkultur seeks to bridge the gap between high arts and youth culture, and includes programmes on the Internet, computer games, and music. ZDFkultur broadcasts free-to-air from ASTRA 19.2°E.
