More HD for Germany

By: SES ASTRA

German public broadcasters ARD and ZDF have reached long-term agreement with ASTRA for five transponders to broadcast high definition channels from ASTRA's satellites at 19.2°east. ARD and ZDF currently broadcast ARTE, Das Erste and ZDF in HD, and new capacity is expected to be used for HD versions of 3Sat, Phoenix, and ARD’s regional affiliates.

The ASTRA transponders will be used in two phases. First, three transponders will be used when the two broadcasters’ analogue channels cease in May next year and a second phase of HD channel launches will use two further transponders in January 2014.

"The broad introduction of HD by the public broadcasters in Germany is an important driver of the digitalisation of satellite television reception,” said SES ASTRA President and CEO, Ferdinand Kayser, “and it recognises satellite's capabilities as the leading digital infrastructure for TV broadcasting."

800,000 receivers for TNTSat, the French digital terrestrial offer via satellite, were sold during 2010. Launched in 2007, TNTSat provides access to 18 free-to-air channels, France O, the 24 regional France 3 channels, plus Arte, France 2, M6 and TF1 in HD, and is available to all French households with a satellite dish aimed at ASTRA 19.2°E and a TNTSat receiver. A total of 2.65 million TNTSat receivers have now been sold.

“The continued strong growth of TNTSAT is driven by digitalisation and the analogue switch-off in more and more French regions,” said SES ASTRA President and CEO, Ferdinand Kayser. “With 14 French regions shifting to purely digital reception in 2011, we expect the growth of TNTSAT to continue with strong momentum.”
