Astra Connect solution selected for UK satellite pilot

Luxembourg, 12 February 2015 - SES (NYSE Euronext Paris and Luxembourg Stock Exchange: SESG) today announced that its Astra Connect for Communities solution will be used in a UK Government-funded Market Test Pilot (MTP) project. These Pilot projects aim to assess which technologies and commercial models are best suited to deliver superfast broadband to the final five percent of households in the UK that currently do not have access to high-speed internet.

Christmas Gift from ProSeibenSat.1

Five popular German high definition entertainment channels from broadcaster ProSeibenSat.1 Media will be available free-to-air over the Christmas holidays. ProSieben HD, Sat.1 HD, kabel eins HD, sixx HD and ProSieben Maxx HD will broadcast unencrypted from December 24 to December 26, so that anyone with an HD satellite receiver and HD television, along with a dish aimed at the ASTRA 19.2°E satellites can watch the channels in HD for free.

The BBC’s online on-demand catch-up service, iPlayer saw 318 million requests for TV and radio programmes in October, or an average of 10.25 million each day – 20% higher than a year ago and bolstered by popular shows such as The Apprentice, The Great British Bake Off and Doctor Who.

Skylink, the DTH satellite platform for residents of the Czech Republic and Slovakia has introduced new high definition channels to its Digital HD package. Entertainment channel, TürkShow, broadcast from Cologne, Germany to the 6.5 million Turkish expatriates in Europe is now available free-to-air from the ASTRA 19.2°E satellite position. Broadcasting from the 11.612MHz/H transponder, TürkShow carries films, drama series and lifestyle shows in Turkish and German.

Ultra HD Rocks

In a World first, a concert by US band Linkin Park on November 19 was broadcast live via an ASTRA satellite in Ultra HD. SES, operator of the ASTRA satellites, teamed up with Samsung to transmit the rock concert from Berlin’s O2 World Arena using the ASTRA Ultra HD demo channel at 10.994GHz/H on ASTRA 19.2°E.

The Force is with Sky

German pay-TV platform Sky Deutschland is devoting a channel to Star Wars, a year before the next Star Wars film is released. For two weeks, December 1-14, Sky Movies Hits is renamed Sky Movies Star Wars HD, featuring the six Star Wars films, behind-the-scenes documentaries and biographies of the actors, 24 hours a day. Sky Star Wars HD broadcasts from the ASTRA 19.2°E satellites.

CNN Moves

Global news provider, CNN has changed the broadcasting frequency of its free-to-air channel broadcasting from the ASTRA 19.2°E satellites and the 24-hour news channel is now transmitting at a new frequency of 11.627GHz/V (SR 22000, FEC 5/6). To help viewers with the transition, broadcasts of CNN International from the old frequency of 11.778GHz/V are continuing until the end of the year.

More Customers for HD+

Five years after the launch of the German encrypted free-to-view high definition platform HD+, over 1.59 million households are now paying the €5/month service fee, up by more than 300,000 since last year. The six-month free trial period is being enjoyed by an additional 1.3 million homes, giving the HD+ platform a total reach of 2.9 million households.
