Research by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) has found that 93% of connected TV sets on sale support the Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV (HbbTV) services that combine online content with television broadcasts. HbbTV is providing a growing audience across Europe with access to on-demand video, programme background information, extended EPGs and other multimedia services.
In Germany, where HbbTV services have been available since 2009 and 10 million HbbTV televisions have been sold, the HbbTV platform from ZDF now generates over 2.5 million views per day. In Spain, RTVE’s HbbTV offerings, launched only eight months ago, reach 700,000 homes.
The HbbTV standard was established by the HbbTV Association, a group of broadcasting and electronics companies including SES (operator of the ASTRA satellites).
