The UK is the leading country for the adoption of PVR recorders and has Europe’s highest proportion (41%) of TV homes with high definition, higher than France (18%) and Germany (28%). Worldwide, only the USA has higher HD penetration (49%). Some 15% of UK consumers own a smart TV (able to connect to the internet for apps, social networking, and online catch-up TV, alongside normal broadcasts), compared with the same in France but only 10% in the USA, and the UK is the World’s biggest user of catch-up TV – almost quarter (23%) of UK connected viewers use this every week, with the USA ranked second (17%) with Spain third (16%).
High definition, PVR recording and catch-up TV are driven in the UK by the Sky and Freesat platforms, broadcast on ASTRA satellites at 28.2°E.
